New Year. New Painting.

2011 was not a good year for the fine artist in me. to be fair, i needed to focus on my commercial art career. after all, that is the reason I moved to chicago.

now that I have a “pattern” established with my commercial art, I can put some time into my fine art. over the past several weeks I have been preparing a canvas for painting #8. this is what the underdrawing would will look like once i finish the canvas’ surface. i plan to refine this drawing from its sketch from my sketchbook.

painting #8

on painting…

art is more than just color on a surface… the role of the artist is to to breath life into what they are working on. when i start a painting i see it only as paint on a surface. it’s not until after the entire surface is covered in pigment can i go to “work”.

i apply layers and layers of paint over top one another until the paint ceases to be just paint on a surface and comes alive. i can see it. i can look at the painting and see where it is “dead” and where it is “alive”.

my current painting in the studio will need at least 1 dozen more layers of paint. it is difficult to post images of it in this stage… as you really need to be standing before it to see the differences. even to a trained eye the subtle changes need to be pointed out.
